YOGA FOR CANCER

A Practice To Help Diminish, Improve, or Eliminate Side Effects From Cancer Treatment

Cancer f*cking sucks.

To get through it you need a village of support but, the most important part is going to be you.

You need to feel as good and strong as you can physically, mentally, and spiritually to face each day, each treatment, and every day afterwards.

And here's the thing about this, oncology yoga is something that you have control and choice over. You can choose this as part of your self-wellness program and be empowered to manage your own health.

Getting diagnosed with cancer often feels like you have lost control or feel like there's nothing you can do about it besides what your doctor guides you to do.

But, YOU CAN choose what you want to be a part of your wellness approach.

YOU'RE HERE BECAUSE YOU'RE A TRIATHLETE.

OR...YOU'RE HERE BECAUSE
YOU'VE BEEN TOUCHED BY CANCER.

Maybe it's both. Or, maybe you just like retreats. (And likely you resonate/identify with being AAPI, BIPOC, Latinx, or LGBTQIA2S+.)

I get it, triathlon...cancer...both seem fairly intimidating to most souls out there but hear me out in how they actually are much more connected than you may realize.

The unique aspect of being a triathlete is that you’re always looking for what is possible. How far can you go, how fast can you be, how long can you last?

If you are touched by cancer, possible feels like something taken away from you, all the things that flash through your mind about what you think you can no longer do or might not be around for.

I’m not exactly saying that if you are touched by cancer the answer to all your troubles is a triathlon, but I am saying that what your mind tells you and what you choose to believe in both scenarios is extremely impactful to your personal experience.

The common denominator is possible.

Possible energy is grateful, it’s exciting, it’s mysterious, it’s positive and it’s hope.

You may be a triathlete staring cancer in the face, thinking about what's impossible.

You may be touched by cancer and thinking, hmm, can I do a triathlon?

Like the saying goes - Whether you think you can or can’t, you are right.

You Can Do Hard Things. And You Get To.  - Death And Yoga (D.A.Y.)

Hi, Welcome. Come on in.
I'm Maison the Creator Boss Lady
around here.

I’m gonna put out there that no one wants to be put in a box of adjectives, but ironically we all still spend a lot of our lives looking for our true selves and our identities.

Who am I? Where do I come from? Where am I going?

Well, you've ended up here at Death And Yoga (D.A.Y.) - a kind of quirky corner of the yoga world. And I suspect you are looking for a place that feels more like you.

This is a space that is inclusive of whoever you are, however you want to or don’t want to identify. All of you is honored and celebrated. You are welcome here, just as you are.

What you will not find here is yoga made for skinny women in Lululemon yoga pants contorting into unreasonable shapes that are completely useless for their real life mobility (unless they are a legit contortionist for Cirque Du Soleil) all the while drinking alkaline water out of some fancy glass water bottle.

Ok, I know I’m throwing some shade, but really what I’m saying is that Western yoga has a fixation on solely the asana/physical practice of yoga, Madonna arms, and has appropriated yoga away from its Indian and African roots.

Yoga is a practice to still/quiet the mind. (You want the Sanskrit? Look up "yogas citta vritti nirodhah". It's 1.2 in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras.)

Asana is but one of eight limbs in yogic philosophy and all this jabber about flexibility and wanting more of it, well the most important part of being flexible is being flexible in your mind.

Your whole life begins with what happens inside your brain. What you choose to think and believe, is the reality you will see.

If you believe the world is misery, the world will reflect back and support that lens to you. You probably know someone like that, someone who only ever sees the negative and only has negative things to say about everything.

Even physical flexibility begins with what your brain believes about it…uh…”I’m not flexible.”, "I'm not flexible enough to do yoga". Ever say those words to yourself? It's basically subconscious self-sabotage.

And as far as how much flexibility you need...there is zero prerequisite for practicing yoga and I believe mobility is a much more useful word for us.

You only need as much mobility in order to lead the life you lead or want to lead.

I know it seems like a crazy combo to specialize in yoga for triathletes, oncology yoga, myo-fascial release, and retreats, add on top of that I’m also an actor, so creative things happen around here sometimes…but it's all connected and flows through me to you.

And as for boxes, adjectives and identities...use what serves you and leave the rest. Also know, you absolutely can decide to change them at any time as you continue to live your life discovering more and more about yourself.

Ok, why is Death in your name?

The word death comes with a lot of different kinds of energy for a person. And a lot of this energy revolves around fear.

Death is certain, life is not.

Fear is temporary.

Opening up conversation around a difficult word and a difficult moment in everyone's life will help ease the fear that surrounds it.

Ultimately, it begs two kinds of questions out of me...

One: What do you live for, how do you live, why do you live?

Two: How can we have conversations about death to decrease the trauma, stress and fear surrounding it to find greater acceptance about a truth for every physical body on this planet?

What needs to be said about death?

So, how does yoga fit into the picture?

Yoga in the Western world is seen as only a physical practice. But, if you trace the deep roots of yoga they go back to both India and Africa.

When you get there, you will find that yoga is a full mind, body and spirit practice. Asana, the physical portion is but one of eight limbs that make up a full yoga practice.

Ultimately, practicing yoga will naturally influence the way you live your daily life. What you choose to believe, to think, and to do.
